Dua Text

Transliteration

Alhamdu lillahil-ladhi qada ‘anna nusukana. Allahumma zidna imanan wa yaqinan wa tawfiqan wa ‘awnan, waghfir lana wa li-aba’ina wa ummahatina wal-muslimina ajma’in.

Meaning

Praise be to Allah, who has enabled us to complete our Hajj rites. O Allah, increase our faith, our certainty, our success and Your help. Forgive us, our fathers, our mothers and all Muslims.

What Is Asked in This Dua

This dua, recited after shaving the head, is an expression of gratitude for completing the rites of Hajj. The servant praises Allah for having granted him the chance to perform the Hajj rituals. Coming at the end of a long and demanding act of worship, this praise acknowledges that success came not through one’s own strength but through Allah’s grace.

Then the servant asks for four things to increase: faith, certainty (yaqin, firm belief free of doubt), success (tawfiq, being guided to what is right) and Allah’s help. The Hajj is over, but servanthood continues; so the servant asks for the spiritual provision that will keep him steadfast on the way home and afterwards. In the last sentence, the request for forgiveness is widened: forgiveness is sought for himself, his father, his mother and all Muslims. In this way the dua turns from personal gratitude into a plea on behalf of the whole Ummah.

When and How to Recite

According to the source book, this dua is recited during Hajj after shaving the head, once the Hajj rites have been completed. It is fitting to recite it right after shaving, in gratitude for having come out of ihram. The source book does not mention a specific number of recitations.

Wudu is not required for the dua, though being in a state of wudu is virtuous. Reciting it while reflecting on its meaning and remembering your parents and all Muslims fits the spirit of the dua. Those who find the Arabic difficult can also express this gratitude and plea through its English meaning.
