Dua When Standing Before the Kaaba

Kâbe Karşısında Okunacak Dua: Okunuşu ve Anlamı

Explanation

These are two duas recited when standing before the Kaaba. The first is a plea for the honour of the House of Allah (Baytullah) to increase, and the second is for the pleasure of Allah and Paradise.

In the first dua, five things are asked for the Kaaba: tashrif (honour), ta’zim (greatness), takrim (generosity and eminence), birr (goodness) and mahabah (majesty). By asking that the House of Allah be exalted even more, the servant expresses their reverence for it. The second dua is for the servant themself: asking for “ridaka wal-jannah” (Your pleasure and Paradise), they seek refuge from “ghadabika wan-nar” (Your wrath and the Fire). The source places the emphasis on Allah’s pleasure: if Allah is pleased with a servant, Paradise follows.

Dua Text

Transliteration

Allahumma zid baytaka tashrifan wa ta’ziman wa takriman wa birran wa mahabah.

Allahumma inni as’aluka ridaka wal-jannah, wa a’udhu bika min ghadabika wan-nar.

Meaning

O Allah! Increase the honour, the greatness, the eminence, the nobility and the majesty of Your House.

O Allah! I ask You for Your pleasure and Your Paradise, and I seek refuge in You from Your wrath and from Hell.

What Is Asked in This Dua

In the first dua you ask for the honour, greatness and majesty of the Kaaba to increase. In the second dua the servant asks for the two greatest things for themself: the pleasure of Allah and Paradise, and seeks refuge from His wrath and from Hell. The book reminds us that Allah’s pleasure is more important than anything else; if Allah is pleased with a servant, there is nothing left for them to worry about.

When and How to Recite

It is recited when standing before the Holy Kaaba. When the Kaaba is seen, the takbir is also said together with this dua: “Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, la ilaha illallahu wallahu akbar, Allahu akbar wa lillahil-hamd.”

Stopping to make dua when you first see the Kaaba is the moment most recommended to pilgrims; it is hoped that a dua made at this moment will be accepted. In the crowd, recite it without disturbing others, giving room to tears and takbir. The dua can also be made in your own language; if you cannot memorise the Arabic text, recite its meaning.

Frequently Asked Questions
