Meaning
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Raise my rank, expand my chest, and make my affairs easy for me. Provide for me from where I do not expect, through Your grace, Your generosity and Your kindness. I ask You by the beauty of Your might, the majesty of Your awe, the might of Your power and the strength of Your greatness: make me one of Your righteous servants who have no fear and do not grieve.
What Is Asked in This Dua
This dua begins with the basmala, and in its first sentences the servant asks for three things: that his rank be raised, that his chest be expanded and that his affairs be made easy. The expansion of the chest means that the inner heaviness lifts and the heart finds relief; for someone going through distress, this is the most central request of the dua. Then the servant asks for provision from where he does not expect, and he asks for it through Allah’s grace, generosity and kindness.
In the second part of the dua, the servant makes his request by the beauty of Allah’s might, the majesty of His awe, the might of His power and the strength of His greatness. These expressions highlight Allah’s greatness and power; against his own helplessness, the servant takes refuge in this power. The final request is to be counted among the righteous servants who have no fear and do not grieve. In this way the dua asks both for relief from today’s distress and for lasting inner peace.
When and How to Recite
As stated in the source book, this dua is recited in times of spiritual distress, inner heaviness and a troubled state of mind. The book reminds us that illnesses can be physical and spiritual, and recommends both consulting a doctor and continuing to recite this dua; that is, the dua is placed alongside treatment, not in place of it. Reciting it in wudu and in a calm setting is preferable but not required. It should be recited while reflecting on its meaning, especially feeling the wish for the chest to be expanded and for affairs to be made easy. One can also make this dua using its meaning in one’s own language.
