Dua Text

Transliteration

Meaning

I have turned my face, inclining to the truth, toward the One who created the heavens and the earth; I am not among those who associate partners with Allah. Surely my prayer, my worship, my life and my death are for Allah, the Lord of the worlds. He has no partner. This is what I have been commanded, and I am among the Muslims.

What Is Asked in This Dua

This dua recited when slaughtering the sacrifice consists of verses taken from Surah al-An’am, and it is more a proclamation of faith than a request. While slaughtering the sacrifice, the servant says that he has turned his face toward Allah, who created the heavens and the earth; with the words “inclining to the truth” he states that he does this with an upright submission, far from all falsehood. Then he openly declares that he is not among those who associate partners with Allah; that is, this sacrifice is for no one other than Allah.

In the second part, the servant proclaims that his prayer, his worship (including the sacrifice), his life and his death belong solely to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. He emphasizes that He has no partner. The last sentence affirms that this is not merely his own choice but a divine command, and that the servant is among the Muslims. In this way, the sacrifice becomes a symbol of dedicating an entire life to Allah.

When and How to Recite

According to the source, this dua is recited when slaughtering the sacrifice. It is appropriate to recite it right before the animal is slaughtered, before the knife is applied, on Eid al-Adha or for other sacrifices such as a vowed sacrifice (nadhr) or aqiqah. No specific number of recitations is mentioned in the source.

Since the text consists of verses of the Quran, it is better to recite it with wudu. It should be recited while reflecting on its meaning, with the awareness that the sacrifice is slaughtered for Allah alone. Those who do not know the Arabic by heart can also express this intention with its meaning in their own language.
