Dua Text
Transliteration
Astaghfirullahal-‘Azimal-ladhi la ilaha illa Huwal-Hayyul-Qayyumu wa atubu ilayh, wa as’aluhut-tawbata wal-maghfirah, innahu Huwat-Tawwabur-Rahim.
Meaning
I seek forgiveness from Allah the Mighty, besides whom there is no god, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all, and I turn to Him. I ask Him for repentance and forgiveness. Surely He is the Accepter of repentance, the Most Merciful.
What Is Asked in This Dua
In this istighfar dua recited at Arafat, the servant first mentions Allah with His most fundamental attributes: there is no god but Him, He is the Ever-Living (al-Hayy) and the Sustainer of all (al-Qayyum). The servant asks for forgiveness from this Lord of majesty; he does not direct his repentance just anywhere, but directly to Him. The phrase “I turn to Him” expresses the resolve to turn away from sin and return to Allah.
In the rest of the dua the servant asks for two things separately: repentance and forgiveness. That is, he asks both to be granted the ability to turn away from sin and for what was done in the past to be covered. The last sentence states the basis of this request: Allah is at-Tawwab, who accepts repentance abundantly, and ar-Rahim, abundant in mercy. The servant asks for pardon trusting not in his own merit but in these two attributes of Allah.
