Meaning
There is no god but Allah; He is One and has no partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise. He has power over all things.
What Is Asked in This Dua
Rather than a request, this dhikr is a declaration of tawhid that proclaims the oneness and greatness of Allah. The servant says that there is no god but Allah, that He is One and has no partner. In this way, before stepping into daily life, he affirms with his tongue that the only Owner and Creator of everything is Allah.
In the rest of the dhikr, the servant states that dominion and praise belong to Allah. In other words, everything one possesses truly belongs to Him, and all praise befits Him alone. The last sentence declares that Allah has power over all things; this is the servant acknowledging his own helplessness and attributing all power to Allah. The source book states that this dhikr is recited after the fard of the Fajr prayer, and that because it is short and easy to memorize, it can also be recited after every prayer. A servant who begins the day with tawhid meets everything he encounters that day with this belief.
When and How to Recite
The source book states that this dhikr is recited after the fard of the Fajr prayer. Because it is short and easy to memorize, it can also be recited after every prayer. No specific number of recitations is mentioned in the source; reciting it once is enough, and you may repeat it if you wish. Since it is recited after the prayer, you are already in a state of wudu; however, wudu is not a condition for dhikr, and it can be said at any time of the day. What matters is to recite it reflecting on its meaning and affirming Allah’s oneness and power from the heart; it can also be said with its meaning in your own language.
