Transliteration
Meaning
There is no god but Allah; He is One and has no partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise. He has power over all things. There is no god but Allah; there is no might and no power except with Allah, the Most High, the Magnificent.
What Is Asked in This Dua
This dhikr brings together two great sentences. The first part is the declaration of tawhid: there is no god but Allah; He is One and has no partner. Here the servant says that all dominion and all praise belong to Allah alone and that He has power over all things. This is a declaration that reminds us who the Owner of the universe is and to whom praise is truly due.
The second part is known as the hawqala: there is no might and no power except with Allah, the Most High, the Magnificent. Here the servant admits his own helplessness; he says that he cannot achieve anything by his own strength and that every success and every protection comes from Allah. There is no explicit request in this dhikr; the servant remembers Allah through His Oneness, His dominion, His power and His majesty. The source book states that it is among the dhikrs considered easy to memorise and great in effect.
When and How to Recite
The source book recommends reciting it at least ten times after the Fajr prayer. Reciting it after the other prayers has also been considered good. Therefore it is fitting to recite it ten times right after the Fajr prayer and, if possible, to add it to the end of every prayer.
Since it is recited after the prayer, one is usually in wudu; wudu is not required for dhikr, but being in wudu is virtuous. Since it is short, it is easy to memorise. What matters is to recite it while reflecting on its meaning, feeling the Oneness of Allah and one’s own helplessness. Those who find the Arabic difficult can also do this dhikr using its meaning in their own language.
Virtue
It is recommended to recite it at least ten times after the Fajr prayer. Reciting it after the prayers has also been considered good.
