Dua After Leaving the Bath

Hamamdan Çıkınca Okunacak Dua: Arapçası ve Anlamı

Explanation

This is the dua to be recited after leaving the hammam (bath or bathroom).

The dua brings together four separate sentences of worship: seeking refuge from Hell with “a’udhu bika mina n-nar”, asking for pardon with “as’aluka ghufranaka”, glorification and praise with “subhanaka llahumma wa bihamdika”, and the testimony of faith (shahadah) with “ashhadu an la ilaha illa anta”. After the body has been cleansed, it carries the intention of purifying the heart from the stain of sin as well. This is why the source says its “meaning is very comprehensive”: in a short text, refuge, pardon, glorification, praise and tawhid (the oneness of Allah) are all expressed together.

Dua Text

Transliteration

Allahumma inni a’udhu bika mina n-nari wa as’aluka ghufranaka. Subhanaka llahumma wa bihamdika, ashhadu an la ilaha illa anta astaghfiruka.

Meaning

O Allah! I seek refuge in You from Hell, and I ask You for Your pardon. O Allah, I glorify You above every imperfection and I praise You. I bear witness that there is no god but You alone. I ask for Your forgiveness.

What Is Asked in This Dua

Protection from Hell and forgiveness are asked for. After the body has been cleansed, one asks for the heart to be cleansed of sin as well.

When and How to Recite

It is recited after leaving the hammam or bathroom. The source book states that it should be recited **at least three times**.

The source particularly stresses that the dua gathers tawhid, glorification, praise and istighfar together, and that its meaning is therefore very comprehensive.

While reciting the dua, asking for the heart to be cleansed just as the body has been cleansed is in keeping with its meaning. The note “at least three times” in the book is specific to this dua; no such number is mentioned for the dua recited when entering the hammam.

Virtue

The source book states that this blessed dua is praiseworthy and its meaning very comprehensive, and that it should be recited at least three times when leaving the hammam.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many times is the dua after leaving the bath recited?

The source book states that it should be recited at least three times.

What does this dua bring together?

It combines seeking refuge from Hell, asking for pardon, glorification, praise and the testimony of faith; this is why the source says its meaning is very comprehensive.

Can it also be recited after leaving the bathroom?

Yes, today’s bathroom is treated the same as the hammam in the source.

What does this dua have to do with the testimony of faith?

At the end of the dua comes “ashhadu an la ilaha illa anta” (I bear witness that there is no god but You); so after cleansing, tawhid is renewed.

Are the duas for entering and leaving the bath the same?

No. When entering, one asks for Paradise and seeks refuge from Hell; when leaving, asking for pardon, glorification, praise and the testimony of faith are added, and it is recited at least three times.
