Ja’far al-Sadiq’s Dua for a Blessed Life and Martyrdom

Câfer-i Sâdık’ın Duası Okunuşu ve Anlamı

Explanation

A very short dua narrated from Ja’far al-Sadiq. It asks that both life and death be in goodness.

Dua Text

اَللَّهُمَّ أَحْيِنِي سَعِيدًا وَأَمِتْنِي شَهِيدًا بِرَحْمَتِكَ يَا أَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِينَ

Transliteration

Allahumma ahyini sa’idan wa amitni shahidan bi-rahmatika ya Arhama ar-rahimin.

Meaning

O Allah! Let me live as one who is blessed with happiness (sa’id), and let me die as a martyr. By Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful.

What Is Asked in This Dua

This dua entrusts both ends of human life to Allah in a single sentence. The servant asks to be “sa’id” for as long as he lives, that is, to live as a happy, fortunate servant who is good in the sight of Allah. The happiness meant here is not only worldly comfort but a good life that also includes happiness in the Hereafter. For death, he asks for martyrdom; he wishes to leave this world in the way of Allah, upon faith, with the most precious of endings.

At the end of the dua, the servant voices this request not as something he is owed but by relying on Allah’s mercy, and he calls upon Him as “the Most Merciful of the merciful.” This very short dua, narrated from Ja’far al-Sadiq, is the concise plea of a servant who asks that both life and death be in goodness; the beginning and the end are left entirely to Allah’s mercy.

When and How to Recite

The source book mentions no specific time or number; it can be recited at any time. It is fitting to recite it at moments of reflecting on the meaning and end of life, upon hearing of an illness or a death, or as a beautiful close to one’s daily duas.

Since it is very short, it is easy to memorise. Reciting it in a state of wudu is preferable but not required. It should be recited while reflecting on its meaning, with the intention of a blessed life and a good ending upon faith. Those who find the Arabic difficult can also make this dua in the same way using its meaning in their own language.
