Dua at the Grave of Umar al-Faruq

Hz. Ömer’in Kabri Başında Okunacak Dua ve Anlamı

Explanation

This is the greeting dua recited at the grave of Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) in Madinah al-Munawwarah.

In the dua, Umar is addressed with three descriptions: “amiral-mu’minin” (Commander of the Believers; he was the first caliph to use this title), “al-faruq” (the one who distinguishes truth from falsehood), and the one who upheld the affairs of the religion after the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The expression “jazakallahu” means may Allah reward you. In the last sentence the two caliphs are addressed together with “fashfa’ lana” (be intercessors for us); since intercession happens only by Allah’s permission, this is seeking shelter in their closeness to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

Dua Text

Transliteration

As-salamu ‘alayka ya amiral-mu’minin. As-salamu ‘alayka ayyuhal-faruqu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. Jazakallahu ‘an Rasulillahi fil-qiyami bi-amri dinihi ba’dahu.

Meaning

Peace be upon you, O Commander of the Believers. Peace be upon you, O Faruq; may the mercy and blessings of Allah be upon you. May Allah reward you in the best way for upholding the affairs of the religion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ after him.

Peace be upon you, O Abu Bakr as-Siddiq and Umar al-Faruq! Intercede for us with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

What Is Asked in This Dua

This dua contains not a request but greetings and prayer. Umar is greeted and a reward from Allah is asked for his service to Islam; then, together with Abu Bakr, intercession with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is requested.

When and How to Recite

In Madinah, after visiting the grave of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, it is recited at the graves of Abu Bakr and Umar next to it. The order of the visit is: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Abu Bakr and then Umar.

Because the Rawdah is crowded during the visit, the dua is recited briefly and quietly; you do not turn your back to the qibla while facing the grave, do not touch the railings and do not take photos. For women, the Rawdah visit takes place at specific hours; the dua is the same.
