Meaning
Allah is sufficient for me in protecting my religion. Allah is sufficient for me in the matters that worry me. Allah is sufficient for me against whoever wrongs me. Allah is sufficient for me against whoever envies me. Allah is sufficient for me against whoever plots evil against me. Allah is sufficient for me at the moment of death, at the questioning in the grave, at the Scales and on the Sirat. Allah is sufficient for me; there is no god but Him, in Him I have put my trust, and He is the Lord of the Mighty Throne.
What Is Asked in This Dua
Every sentence of this dua begins with “hasbiyallah”, meaning “Allah is sufficient for me”. The servant first says that Allah is enough for them in protecting their religion; then declares that Allah is enough for them in the matters that worry them, and against whoever wrongs them, envies them or plots evil against them. In this way they show Allah as their only support, both against the anxieties within and the hostility coming from outside.
In the rest of the dua the servant turns their gaze to the Hereafter: they say that Allah will be enough for them at the moment of death, at the questioning in the grave, at the Scales and on the Sirat. The last sentence is a verse taken from Surah At-Tawbah; it declares that there is no god but Allah, that the servant has put their trust in Him, and that He is the Lord of the Mighty Throne. Rather than an explicit request, the dua is a declaration of trust and reliance on Allah (tawakkul) in every situation.
When and How to Recite
The source does not mention a specific time or number; it can be recited at any time. It fits being recited in the face of worry, envy and hostility. The source book states that it is recited to ask for the protection of one’s wealth and self, and for well-being and peace, and that it is also recommended for seeking refuge in Allah from disbelief and poverty.
Being in a state of wudu is preferable but not a condition. Although its last sentence is a verse, it is recited from memory, so the ruling on touching the Mushaf does not apply. What matters is truly feeling it each time you say “Allah is sufficient for me” and reciting it with trust in Allah. You can also make this dua with its meaning in your own language.
Virtue
It is recited to ask for the protection of one’s wealth and self, and for well-being and peace. It has also been recommended for seeking refuge in Allah from disbelief and poverty.
