Transliteration
Alif Lam Mim. Allahu la ilaha illa huwal-Hayyul-Qayyum. Wa ilahukum ilahun wahidun la ilaha illa huwar-Rahmanur-Rahim.
Meaning
Alif Lam Mim. Allah: there is no god but Him; He is the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all that exists. Your God is one God; there is no god but Him; He is the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
What Is Asked in This Dua
The Dua of Tawhid is not a request built from the servant’s own words; it is a declaration of Allah’s oneness through verses taken from two places in the Quran. It begins with “Alif Lam Mim” from the opening of Surah Al ‘Imran; then it states that there is no god but Allah, and that He is al-Hayy, the Ever-Living, and al-Qayyum, the One who sustains everything. In reciting this verse, the servant affirms that Allah is the only support of life and of all existence.
In the verse taken from Surah al-Baqarah, tawhid is emphasised once more with the words “Your God is one God”, and Allah’s names ar-Rahman and ar-Rahim are mentioned. In this way, this short text expresses Allah’s oneness, His being Ever-Living, His sustaining of everything and His mercy all together. Before asking for anything, the servant comes to know whom they are turning to and declares their belief in Allah’s own words.
When and How to Recite
No specific time or number of recitations is mentioned for this dua in the source. It can be recited at any time with the intention of expressing belief in tawhid, renewing one’s faith, or remembering Allah’s oneness before beginning a dua.
Since the text consists entirely of verses of the Quran, it is preferable to recite it with wudu. It should be recited while reflecting on the meaning of the verses and dwelling on Allah being al-Hayy and al-Qayyum. Someone who finds the Arabic difficult can also express tawhid by reading the meaning of the verses in their own language.
