Transliteration
Allahumma inni as’alukal-jannata wa a’udhu bika minan-nar.
Meaning
O Allah! I ask You for Paradise, and I seek refuge in You from the Fire.
What Is Asked in This Dua
This dua, recited when entering the bath, consists of a single sentence and brings together two great requests. The servant asks Allah for Paradise and seeks refuge in Him from Hell. It is a plea that sums up the ultimate goal of all of a believer’s efforts in this world: to attain eternal bliss and to be saved from eternal punishment.
There is wisdom in reciting this dua when entering the bath. The source states that the heat of the washing place is a reminder of Hell. With the warmth touching his body, the servant remembers the punishment of the Hereafter and seeks refuge in Allah from it; at the same time, he asks for Paradise, where the finest coolness and comfort are found. In this way, an ordinary moment of cleansing becomes a moment of dua in which awareness of the Hereafter is renewed. While cleansing his body, the servant also directs his heart with longing for Paradise and fear of Hell.
When and How to Recite
It is recited when entering the bath, bathroom or any place for washing, while still at the threshold of the door. The source mentions no specific number of recitations; reciting it once is enough. Wudu is not required. This dua is recited when entering, not inside the washing place; in places where one should refrain from mentioning Allah’s name aloud, the dua is made in the heart rather than with the tongue. Those who find the Arabic difficult can also make the dua with its meaning in their own language, saying “O Allah, I ask You for Paradise and I seek refuge in You from the Fire.”
