Dua When Looking in the Mirror

Aynaya Bakarken Okunacak Dua Okunuşu ve Anlamı

Explanation

A dua recited when looking in the mirror. It teaches gratitude for the beauty one has been given and asks that one’s character be made beautiful as well.

Dua Text

Transliteration

Alhamdu lillahil-ladhi sawwa khalqi fa ‘adalahu wa karrama surata wajhi wa hassanaha wa ja’alani minal-muslimin. Allahumma kama hassanta khalqi fa hassin khuluqi.

Meaning

Praise be to Allah, who created me and fashioned me in proportion, who honored and beautified the form of my face, and who made me one of the Muslims. O Allah! Just as You have made my outward form beautiful, make my character beautiful too.

What Is Asked in This Dua

This dua, recited when looking in the mirror, has two parts. In the first part, the servant praises Allah, who created him and fashioned his form, and who made the shape of his face honorable and beautiful. He acknowledges that the face he sees in the mirror is not a coincidence but the work of Allah’s balanced and beautiful creation. In the same sentence, by saying “who made me one of the Muslims,” he places the blessing of faith alongside the beauty of creation.

In the second part, the servant asks something of Allah: “Just as You have made my outward form beautiful, make my character beautiful too.” Here the link between outer and inner beauty is expressed; the servant asks that the beauty of his face be reflected in his character as well. The source book states that a person looking in the mirror should see the power of Allah and give thanks for the material and spiritual blessings he has been given. In this way, the mirror stops being a tool of vanity and becomes a means of gratitude and self-improvement.

When and How to Recite

It is recited when looking in the mirror, especially while getting ready in the morning or before going out. The source mentions no specific number of recitations; it can be briefly remembered each time you look in the mirror. Wudu is not required. While reciting it, the essential thing is to reflect that the face in the mirror is the work of Allah and to sincerely ask that your character be made beautiful as well. Those who find the Arabic difficult can also make the dua with its meaning in their own language, saying “O Allah, just as You have made my outward form beautiful, make my character beautiful too.”

Virtue

The source book states that a person looking in the mirror should see the power of Allah and give thanks for the material and spiritual blessings he has been given.
