Dua Text
Transliteration
Allahumma inni as’aluka khayral-mawliji wa khayral-makhraji, bismillahi walajna wa bismillahi kharajna wa ‘alallahi Rabbina tawakkalna.
Meaning
O Allah! I ask You for the best of entering and the best of leaving. In the name of Allah we enter, in the name of Allah we leave, and in Allah, our Lord, we put our trust.
What Is Asked in This Dua
In this dua recited when entering the home, the servant first asks Allah for the best of entering and leaving. That is, he wishes not only that stepping through the door of the house be good, but also that leaving that house and going out into the world be good. In this way, the home is entrusted to Allah’s protection both as a refuge and as a starting point for setting out to do good.
In the second part of the dua, the servant declares that he enters and leaves in the name of Allah, and says that he puts his trust in Allah, his Lord. This phrase reminds us that safety at home comes not from locks or walls but from remembering the name of Allah. The servant expresses that, whether inside or outside the home, he relies on Allah alone. The dua turns the most ordinary act of the day, entering the home, into a moment of remembrance (dhikr) and surrender.
When and How to Recite
The source book states that this dua is recited when entering the home; since it asks that both entering and leaving be good, it can also be remembered with the same awareness when leaving the house. It is short enough to be said briefly each time you enter the home; the source book does not mention a specific number of recitations. There is no requirement of wudu. It is enough to say the basmala as you step through the door and recite it while reflecting on its meaning; those who find the Arabic difficult can also pray with its meaning in their own language, saying: “In the name of Allah I entered, and I put my trust in my Lord.”
