Dua on Mount Safa

Safa Tepesinde Okunacak Dua Okunuşu ve Anlamı

Explanation

This is the dua recited upon climbing Mount Safa. It is taken from Surah al-Baqarah. The sa’i between Safa and Marwa begins here.

Dua Text

Transliteration

A’udhu billahi minash-shaytanir-rajim, bismillahir-rahmanir-rahim. Innas-safa wal-marwata min sha’a’irillah, fa-man hajjal-bayta awi’tamara fa-la junaha ‘alayhi an yattawwafa bihima, wa man tatawwa’a khayran fa-innallaha shakirun ‘alim.

Meaning

I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan. In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Surely Safa and Marwa are among the symbols of Allah. So whoever visits the Kaaba with the intention of Hajj or Umrah, there is no blame on him for performing sa’i between them. And whoever does good wholeheartedly, surely Allah rewards it and knows all things.

What Is Asked in This Dua

This text recited on Mount Safa is verse 158 of Surah al-Baqarah, and it is recited after seeking refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan and saying the basmala. The verse declares that Safa and Marwa are among the symbols (sha’a’ir) of Allah. By reciting this verse, the servant remembers that the place where he will perform sa’i is a place made precious by Allah, and affirms that the source of the worship he is about to perform is the Quran itself.

The rest of the verse says that there is no blame on those who visit the Kaaba with the intention of Hajj or Umrah for performing sa’i between these two hills. The last sentence emphasizes that whoever does good wholeheartedly will not go unrewarded, and that Allah is ash-Shakir (the One who rewards) and al-‘Alim (the All-Knowing). In this way, as he begins the sa’i, the servant sets out confident that his effort is known to Allah and will be rewarded.

When and How to Recite

According to the source, this dua is recited upon climbing Mount Safa; the sa’i between Safa and Marwa begins here. The source book states that after tawaf the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ prayed two rak’ahs, climbed Safa, faced the Kaaba and said takbir and tahlil. Accordingly, it is fitting to face the Kaaba on Safa, recite the verse, and then say takbir (Allahu akbar) and tahlil (La ilaha illallah).

Since the text is a verse of the Quran, it is preferable to recite it with wudu; after tawaf one is already in a state of wudu. It should be recited while reflecting on its meaning, and those who find the Arabic difficult can also make the dua with its meaning in their own language. No specific number of recitations is mentioned in the source.

Virtue

The source book states that after tawaf the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ prayed two rak’ahs, climbed Safa, faced the Kaaba and said takbir and tahlil.
