Dua Between Safa and Marwa

Safa ile Merve Arasında Okunacak Dua ve Anlamı

Explanation

This is the dua recited while performing sa’y between Safa and Marwa.

The dua gathers three requests into one sentence: “ighfir” (forgive), “irham” (have mercy) and “tajawaz ‘amma ta’lam” (pass over the faults of mine that You know). The final phrase, “innaka antal-a’azzul-akram” (You are the Most Mighty, the Most Noble), mentions two of Allah’s names. Sa’y commemorates Hajar running between Safa and Marwa in search of water for her son Ismail; this short dua is the servant remembering their own faults and asking for forgiveness in the midst of that running.

Dua Text

رَبِّ اغْفِرْ وَارْحَمْ وَتَجَاوَزْ عَمَّا تَعْلَمُ اِنَّكَ اَنْتَ الْاَعَزُّ الْاَكْرَمُ

Transliteration

Rabbighfir warham wa tajawaz ‘amma ta’lamu, innaka antal-a’azzul-akram.

Meaning

My Lord! Forgive me, do not withhold Your mercy from me, and pass over the mistakes of mine that You know. For You are the Most Mighty and the Most Noble.

What Is Asked in This Dua

It is a short but comprehensive dua: you ask for forgiveness, mercy and pardon for the mistakes that are known. The servant asks for pardon, acknowledging that Allah already knows their mistakes.

When and How to Recite

It is recited while performing sa’y between Safa and Marwa. Sa’y begins at the hill of Safa and is completed with four ascents and three descents. The book states that this dua is also recited at the Zamzam well.

Sa’y is performed after tawaf; it starts at Safa, men walk quickly (harwalah) in the section marked with green lights, and it ends at Marwa. This dua can be repeated on every lap; it is also common to say “Rabbighfir warham” between the two green markers. Having wudu during sa’y is not a condition, but it is in keeping with good manners.
