Dua Text
Transliteration
Alhamdu lillahi ‘ala ma hadana, wal-hamdu lillahi ‘ala ma hadana bihi ‘alayna. Allahumma hadhihi nasiyati fa-taqabbal minni waghfir li dhunubi. Allahumma-ghfir li wa lil-muhalliqina wal-muqassirina ya Wasi’al-maghfirah, amin.
Meaning
Praise be to Allah for guiding us; praise be to Allah for the blessings He has bestowed upon us. O Allah, this is my hair; accept it from me and forgive my sins. O Allah, forgive me and those who shave their hair and those who shorten it. O my Lord, abundant in forgiveness, amin.
What Is Asked in This Dua
This dua recited while shaving begins with praise: the servant thanks Allah for granting guidance and bestowing blessings. Having reached the end of the Hajj journey is a true reason for this praise. Then the servant presents his shaved hair to Allah like an offering: “This is my hair; accept it from me.” In this way, a simple shave becomes an act of worship and of submission.
Along with his hair, the servant asks for his sins to be forgiven too. A striking aspect of the dua is that the servant asks for forgiveness not only for himself but for all pilgrims who shave or shorten their hair. Finally, Allah is mentioned with the attribute “abundant in forgiveness,” and the dua ends with “amin.” The source states that shaving is a condition for leaving ihram; the dua turns this condition into a conscious moment of servanthood.
When and How to Recite
According to the source, this dua is recited while shaving the head to leave ihram during Hajj. The source book states that shaving has been made a condition for leaving ihram and that it must be done while still in ihram; therefore the dua should be recited as the shaving begins, before leaving ihram.
Being in a state of wudu is preferable but not required for dua. It should be recited while reflecting on its meaning, with gratitude for completing the worship of Hajj. Those who find the Arabic difficult can also make the dua with its meaning in their own language. No specific number of recitations is mentioned in the source.
