Transliteration

As-salamu ‘alayka ya sahiba Rasulillahi fil-ghari wa rafiqihi fil-asfar. As-salamu ‘alayka ayyuhas-Siddiq. Jazakallahu ‘an Rasulillahi khayral-jaza’i wa radiyallahu ‘anka ahsanar-rida. As-salamu ‘alayka ya amiral-mu’minin.

Meaning

Peace be upon you, O companion of the Messenger of Allah in the cave and his fellow traveler on journeys. Peace be upon you, O Siddiq. May Allah reward you in the best way on behalf of the Messenger of Allah and be pleased with you in the best way. Peace be upon you, O Commander of the Believers.

What Is Asked in This Dua

This dua, recited at the grave of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), is built on greeting him with peace and asking Allah for good on his behalf. The visitor remembers Abu Bakr by his best-known qualities: the Messenger of Allah’s companion in the cave during the Hijrah and his fellow traveler on journeys. These words recall his loyalty to the Prophet and how he stood by him in the hardest moments.

He is then addressed by his title “Siddiq,” meaning the one who affirms the truth, truthful in word and in heart. The visitor asks Allah to reward him in the best way on behalf of the Messenger of Allah and to be pleased with him in the best way. In other words, he asks nothing for himself but prays for good for Abu Bakr. The dua ends by greeting him as “Commander of the Believers,” which recalls his caliphate and his place at the head of the Ummah.

When and How to Recite

According to the source book, this dua is recited at the grave of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) in Madinah. It is fitting to recite it after visiting and greeting the grave of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, standing respectfully before Abu Bakr’s grave right next to it. The source book does not mention a specific number of recitations.

Wudu is not required for the dua; since you are in the Prophet’s Mosque (Masjid an-Nabawi), you will already be in a state of wudu. It should be recited with reflection on its meaning and with respect for the foremost of the Companions. Those who find the Arabic difficult can also offer the greeting and the prayer for good through its English meaning.
