Dua of Ali for Relief from Debt

Explanation
This is the dua that Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) described to someone, saying that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had taught it to him.
The dua consists of two sentences. “Allahummakfini bi-halalika ‘an haramika”: O Allah, suffice me with what is lawful so that I have no need for what is unlawful. “Wa aghnini bi-fadlika ‘amman siwaka”: enrich me through Your grace so that I am not in need of anyone besides You. The greatest danger for a person in debt is reaching for what is unlawful when hard-pressed, and holding out their hand to people; the dua asks for protection from exactly these two dangers. The same dua is also reported in other narrations as a “dua for debt”, and it is related that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught it to a Companion so that he could pay off his debt.
Dua Text
اَللَّهُمَّ اكْفِنِى بِحَلَالِكَ عَنْ حَرَامِكَ وَاَغْنِنِى بِفَضْلِكَ عَمَّنْ سِوَاكَ
Transliteration
Allahummakfini bi-halalika ‘an haramika wa aghnini bi-fadlika ‘amman siwaka.
Meaning
O Allah! Make me content with what You have made lawful and keep me away from what You have made unlawful. Make me rich through Your bounty and do not leave me in need of anyone other than You.
What Is Asked in This Dua
Two things are asked: to be content with what is lawful and not be in need of what is unlawful, and to be enriched by Allah’s grace and not have to hold out your hand to anyone. What stands out is that it does not ask directly for money, but for lawful provision (rizq) and richness of the heart.
When and How to Recite
The book gives no specific time. It is recited when struggling with debt and in financial hardship; it is one of the duas recommended to be recited regularly.
You can make it a habit to recite it in the morning and evening and after the prayers. The dua is placed not in place of the effort to pay off the debt, but alongside it: cutting unnecessary spending, speaking openly with the creditor, not taking on new debt and working for lawful earnings complete the dua. For debt, the dua of refuge beginning with “Allahumma inni a’udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazan…” is also recited.
Virtue
When describing this dua, Ali said: “Even if you have a debt as large as Mount Qaf, you will pay it off by means of this dua.”
