Meaning
O Allah! I seek refuge in You from knowingly associating anything with You, and I ask Your forgiveness for what I do unknowingly. O Allah, I have entered the morning taking You, the angels who carry Your Throne and all of Your creation as witnesses that You are Allah; there is no god but You; You are One and You have no partner. I ask Your forgiveness and I turn to You in repentance. I bear witness that Muhammad is Your servant and Your Messenger.
What Is Asked in This Dua
In this dua for protection from shirk, the servant first seeks refuge from the greatest danger: knowingly associating partners with Allah. Then they also ask forgiveness for what they do unknowingly, because a person can be tainted by shirk without even realising it. These two sentences are the servant’s request for protection from both open and hidden shirk.
In the second part, as they enter the morning, the servant bears witness: taking Allah, the angels who carry His Throne and all created beings as witnesses, they declare that Allah is the only god and has no partner. Then they ask for forgiveness, turn to Allah, and bear witness that Muhammad ﷺ is Allah’s servant and Messenger. In this way the dua begins with seeking refuge from shirk and becomes an istighfar completed with the testimony of tawhid and prophethood.
