Meaning

O Allah! I ask of You, for all praise belongs to You; there is no god but You; You are the One who bestows abundantly. O Most Compassionate, O Most Bountiful, O Originator of the heavens and the earth, O Owner of majesty and honour, O Ever-Living, O Sustainer of all! Send blessings upon Muhammad and his family, and by Your mercy fulfil my need, O Most Merciful of the merciful.

What Is Asked in This Dua

In the dua of Anas ibn Malik, the servant begins their request with a declaration of praise and tawhid: all praise belongs to Allah, there is no god but Him, and He is the One who bestows abundantly. Then they call upon Allah with His names one after another: al-Hannan, the Most Compassionate; al-Mannan, the Most Bountiful; the Originator of the heavens and the earth; the Owner of majesty and honour; al-Hayy and al-Qayyum. These names first remind the servant how generous and powerful the One is to whom they are about to present their need.

At the end of the dua, the servant sends blessings upon Muhammad ﷺ and his family and then states the actual request: “By Your mercy, fulfil my need.” The need is not specified; for this reason the dua can be recited for any kind of need (hajah). Turning to the Most Merciful of the merciful, the servant hopes that their request will be met with mercy.
