Meaning

O Allah! Forgive our living and our dead, those of us who are present and those who are absent, our men and our women, our young and our old, my Lord. Whomever of us You keep alive, keep alive upon Islam; whomever of us You take in death, take upon faith. Grant this deceased person peace, rest, forgiveness and Your good pleasure. O Allah, if this person was good, increase their good deeds; if they were sinful, pass over their sins. Receive them with safety, glad tidings, honour and nearness. O Most Merciful of those who show mercy, do this through Your mercy.

What Is Asked in This Dua

Forgiveness and mercy are asked for the deceased, and for those left behind, to live upon faith and die upon faith. The dua is made not only for that deceased person but for all Muslims, the living and the dead.

When and How to Recite

It is recited after the third takbir in the funeral prayer.

If the deceased is a woman, the dua is recited in the feminine form, continuing as “wa khussa hadhihi l-mayyitata…”, “in kanat muhsinatan fa-zid fi ihsaniha…”. The same dua is recited in the funeral prayer in absentia (salat al-gha’ib), performed for someone whose body is not present.
