Salawat Befitting the Prophet’s Honor

Şerefine Layık Salâtü Selâm Okunuşu ve Anlamı

Explanation

A short salawat that is easy to memorize. It expresses the wish for a salat worthy of the dignity of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Dua Text

Transliteration

Allahumma salli wa sallim wa barik ‘ala sayyidina Muhammadin kama yanbaghi li-sharafi nubuwwatihi wa li-‘izami qadrihil-‘azim.

Meaning

O Allah! Send salat, peace and blessings upon our master Muhammad in a way that befits the honor of his prophethood and the greatness of his exalted rank.

What Is Asked in This Dua

In this short salawat, the servant asks Allah to send salat, peace and blessings upon our master Muhammad ﷺ. The measure of this request is remarkable, however: by saying “in a way that befits the honor of his prophethood and the greatness of his exalted rank,” the servant asks that the salat be worthy of the Prophet’s dignity. In doing so, he admits the inadequacy of his own words and abilities and leaves it to Allah to determine the fitting reward.

The salawat highlights two aspects of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ: the honor of his prophethood and his exalted worth in the sight of Allah. Admitting that he cannot know what salat is truly worthy of him, the servant takes refuge in Allah’s knowledge and generosity. The source states that this salawat is short and easy to memorize; thanks to this, it can be repeated often and becomes a practical way of keeping love and devotion for the Prophet alive.

When and How to Recite

The source states that reciting it especially on Fridays is recommended. Besides Friday, it can be recited after the prayers, at times set aside for sending salawat, or at any time during the day. The source mentions no specific number of recitations. Since it is short, it is easy to memorize and can be repeated often. Wudu is not required, though being in a state of wudu is virtuous. The essential thing is to reflect on its meaning and recite it with respect for the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ; one can also ask for salat upon him with its meaning in one’s own language.

Virtue

It is especially recommended to recite it on Fridays.
