Meaning
O Allah! Calm the severity of Your overpowering wrath with a subtle grace coming from the unseen realm (malakut), so that we may hold on to the hem of Your kindness and seek refuge in You from the descent of Your wrath. O You whose power is perfect and whose blessings embrace all; O Possessor of Majesty and Honor! O Allah, protect me from the evil of epidemic and plague. Grant us respite, grant us long life, let our homes flourish with us, and do not destroy us because of our sins. He is the Ever-Living, the Self-Sufficient, the Everlasting, and He has a protecting shelter. We have entered that shelter and sought protection through Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. All praise belongs to Allah alone.
What Is Asked in This Dua
In this dua the servant admits their helplessness before the severity of Allah’s wrath and asks that this severity be calmed by a subtle grace coming from the unseen realm. The request is this: to seek refuge in Allah Himself from the descent of His wrath, and to hold on to the hem of His kindness. Here Allah is called upon as the One whose power is perfect, whose blessings embrace everything, the Possessor of Majesty and Honor; that is, as a Lord whose greatness is feared and whose generosity is trusted.
In the second part the request becomes concrete: protection from the evil of epidemic and plague. The servant asks that they and their community be granted respite and long life, and that homes continue to flourish with these people. The last sentence carries a tone of repentance: let us not be destroyed because of the sins we are responsible for. In this way the epidemic is seen not only as a disease but as a warning for the servant to remember their sins and return to Allah.
