Dua Text

Transliteration

Asbahna ‘ala fitratil-islami wa ‘ala kalimatil-ikhlasi wa ‘ala dini nabiyyina Muhammadin sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallama wa ‘ala millati abina Ibrahima ‘alayhis-salatu was-salamu hanifan wa ma ana minal-mushrikin.

Meaning

We have entered the morning upon the natural disposition (fitrah) of Islam, upon the word of sincerity, upon the religion of our Prophet Muhammad, and upon the upright (hanif) way of our father Ibrahim. And I am not one of those who associate partners with Allah.

What Is Asked in This Dua

In this morning dua of faith, rather than voicing a request, the servant declares with what identity they are starting the day. By saying “We have entered the morning upon the fitrah of Islam”, they state that they are upon the pure belief of their original nature; by saying “upon the word of sincerity”, they state that they remain bound to the word of tawhid. Then they declare that they have entered the morning upon the religion of our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and upon the hanif way of our father Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him), that is, the way that is far from every kind of shirk and turns to Allah alone.

The dua ends with the sentence “I am not one of those who associate partners with Allah.” In this way the servant begins the day with an awareness of faith, Islam and sincerity; they place themselves on the line of tawhid stretching from Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, and openly declare before Allah that they are far from shirk. The source states that this dua is at once a dua of faith, of Islam and of sincerity, and that it holds many benefits.

When and How to Recite

According to its description, this dua is recited on waking up in the morning; the phrase “we have entered the morning” in the text also shows this. Since it is both a dua for renewing faith and a dua for starting the day, it is fitting to recite it every morning before beginning the day. No specific number of recitations is mentioned in the source.

Being in a state of wudu is preferable; it should be recited as soon as you get up, thinking about the faith with which you are starting the day. Since it is a short text, it is easy to memorise. Someone who finds the Arabic difficult can also start the day by making the same declaration using its meaning in their own language.

Virtue

The source book states that this dua is at once a dua of faith, of Islam and of sincerity, and that it holds many benefits.
