Dua Text
Transliteration
Allahumma salli ‘ala man khatamta bihir-risalata wa ayyadtahu bin-nasri wal-kawthari wash-shafa’ah.
Meaning
O Allah! Send Your salat upon Muhammad, with whom You sealed prophethood, and whom You supported with Your help, the pool of Kawthar and the right of intercession.
What Is Asked in This Dua
In this salawat, the servant asks for salat upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ while remembering him with three qualities. First, he mentions that he is the last prophet, with whom Allah brought prophethood to an end. This is the expression, in the language of salawat, of the belief that the Prophet Muhammad is Allah’s final messenger.
Then the servant remembers the three things with which Allah supported the Prophet: help, the pool of Kawthar and the right of intercession. Allah’s help recalls his struggle in this world, the pool of Kawthar the honor granted to him in the Hereafter, and the right of intercession his compassion for his community. The source states that this salawat is recited with the intention of attaining the intercession of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. By mentioning his right of intercession while sending salat upon him, the servant expresses his hope of having a share in that intercession on the Day of Judgment.
When and How to Recite
The source mentions no specific time or number of recitations; it can be recited at any time, especially when sending salawat with the intention of attaining the intercession of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It is fitting to repeat it after the prayers, on Friday and Thursday night (the night before Friday), or whenever one remembers during the day. Wudu is not required, though being in a state of wudu is virtuous. The essential thing is to reflect on its meaning and recite it while affirming from the heart that he is the final messenger and the intercessor; one can also ask for salat upon him with its meaning in one’s own language.
