Dua After Prayer (Inni Wajjahtu)

Namazdan Sonra Okunacak Dua Okunuşu ve Anlamı

Explanation

This is the dua recited after the prayer. It is taken from Surah al-An’am and is the declaration of tawhid of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him).

Dua Text

إِنِّي وَجَّهْتُ وَجْهِيَ لِلَّذِي فَطَرَ السَّمٰوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ حَنِيفًا وَمَا أَنَا مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ

Transliteration

Inni wajjahtu wajhiya lilladhi fataras-samawati wal-arda hanifan wa ma ana minal-mushrikin.

Meaning

I have turned my face, inclining to the truth, toward the One who created the heavens and the earth. And I am not of those who associate partners with Allah.

What Is Asked in This Dua

Rather than a request, this dua is a declaration of affirmation and devotion. The servant says that he has turned his face toward Allah, who created the heavens and the earth. “Turning the face” means turning to Allah with one’s whole being, with the heart and with the will to devote oneself. He does this as one who inclines to the truth and keeps away from falsehood, that is, as a hanif.

At the end of the dua, the servant declares that he is not one of the polytheists; he states that he associates nothing with Allah and worships Him alone. In Surah al-An’am, these words appear as the declaration of tawhid of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him). Reciting it after the prayer means affirming that the prayer just performed was for Allah alone and aimed at no other purpose. The book states that the purpose of this dua is that the prayer performed is not lost and that its spiritual benefit takes effect.

When and How to Recite

This dua is recited after the prayer, right after giving the salam. It is not specific to any particular time; it can be recited after any of the five daily prayers. No specific number of recitations is mentioned in the source.

The dua is verse 79 of Surah al-An’am; it is preferable to recite it after the prayer in a state of wudu, reflecting on its meaning and affirming inwardly that you have turned to Allah alone. Those who find the Arabic difficult can also make the dua with its meaning in their own language.

Virtue

The book states that the purpose of this dua is that the prayer performed is not lost and that its spiritual benefit takes effect.
