الرَّحْمٰن
The One who shows mercy to all His creation without distinction.

Rahman means the One whose mercy encompasses all created beings; it describes the vast mercy that reaches everyone in this world, without distinguishing between believer and unbeliever. It comes from the same root as Rahim, but its form is broader: Rahman conveys the vastness of mercy, Rahim its constancy. After the name Allah, it is considered the name closest to the Divine Essence.
In the Quran: It occurs in the basmala and in verses 1 and 3 of Surah al-Fatiha; there is also a surah in the Quran that bears its name (Surah ar-Rahman).
Rahman describes the general mercy in this world that covers all created beings: believers and unbelievers alike receive provision and draw breath. Rahim refers to the special mercy in the Hereafter reserved for believers alone. That is why both are said together in the basmala.
It cannot be given to a person as a name. In the Quran this name is reserved for Allah alone; it is used with the word “servant” attached, as in “Abdurrahman” (servant of the Most Merciful).
