Meaning

My God! You are my Lord, and I am the servant. You are the Creator, and I am the created. You are the Provider, and I am the one provided for. You are the Owner, and I am the owned. You are the Mighty, and I am the lowly. You are the Rich, and I am the poor. You are the Ever-Living, and I am mortal. You are the Everlasting, and I am perishing. You are the Generous, and I am the flawed. You are the One who does good, and I am the one who does wrong. You are the Forgiving, and I am the sinner. You are the Great, and I am the small. You are the Strong, and I am the weak. You are the Giver, and I am the one who asks. You are the Secure One, and I am the fearful. You are the Most Bountiful, and I am the needy. You are the One who answers prayers, and I am the one who calls upon You. Forgive my sins and pardon me; by Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful.

What Is Asked in This Dua

In this munajat, before asking for anything directly, the servant speaks at length about who he is and who his Lord is. In each sentence he places one of Allah’s attributes beside his own opposite state: Allah is the Lord, he is the servant; Allah is the Creator, he is the created; Allah is the Provider, he is the one provided for; Allah is the Mighty, the Rich, the Ever-Living and the Everlasting, while he is lowly, poor, mortal and perishing. These contrasts let one feel the awareness of servanthood deeply.

The list turns into a moral confession: Allah is the Generous, he is the flawed; Allah does good, he does wrong; Allah is the Forgiving, he is the sinner. The servant lays bare his weakness, his neediness and his fear, while remembering Allah as the Strong, the Bountiful, the Secure One and the One who answers prayers. After all this preparation comes a single request: that his sins be forgiven and that he be pardoned, and he asks this through the mercy of the Most Merciful of the merciful.

When and How to Recite

This is a famous munajat attributed to Uwais al-Qarani. The source book does not mention a specific time or number of recitations; it is recited with the intention of repentance (tawbah) and of renewing one’s awareness of servanthood.

It can be recited at any time, especially when you feel remorse for your sins, in the pre-dawn hours (sahar), or in quiet moments of self-reflection, preferably with wudu and while reflecting on its meaning. Reciting it while sincerely feeling the contrast in each sentence is true to the essence of the dua. Those who find the Arabic difficult can make the same munajat with its meaning in their own language.
