Meaning
O Allah! Send complete mercy and perfect peace upon our master Muhammad, through whose honor knots are untied, hardships are lifted, needs are fulfilled, wishes and good endings are attained, and for the sake of whose blessed face rain is sought from the clouds. And send peace upon his family and companions as well.
What Is Asked in This Dua
In this salawat the servant asks Allah to send complete mercy and perfect peace upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. This is the essence of salawat: the servant prays first not for themselves but for the Prophet. Then the Prophet ﷺ is remembered through the value and honor Allah has given him: through his honor knots are untied, hardships are lifted, needs are fulfilled, wishes and good endings are attained, and for the sake of his blessed face rain is sought.
These expressions are the servant’s indirect way of describing their own state. If there is a knot that will not come undone, a hardship that will not lift, a need that has not been met, the servant presents these to Allah by sending salawat upon the Prophet. The salawat ends with peace upon the Prophet’s family and companions. The source states that this salawat is said with the intention that hardships be lifted and wishes be accepted.
When and How to Recite
The source states that it can be recited by night and by day and that it will have an effect on whatever intention it is recited with. So it is fitting to recite it at any time, especially in times of hardship, a matter that will not resolve, or an unmet need. The source states that when it is recited for a particular matter, it has become a custom to complete it by reciting it 4444 times; this number can be completed by one person spread over time, or together as a group.
Being in a state of wudu is preferable but not a condition for salawat. What matters is reciting it while reflecting on its meaning, knowing that you are sending blessings and peace upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Whoever finds the Arabic difficult can send salawat using its meaning in their own language.
Virtue
It can be recited by night and by day; it is stated that it will have an effect on whatever intention it is recited with. When it is recited for a particular matter, it has become a custom to complete it (khatm) by reciting it 4444 times.
