Dua for Those Who Eat Together

Explanation
This is a short dua of praise recited together after a communal meal.
Dua Text
اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَنَا وَسَقَانَا وَجَعَلَنَا مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ
Transliteration
Alhamdu lillahil-ladhi at’amana wa saqana wa ja’alana minal-muslimin.
Meaning
All praise is due to Allah, who fed us, gave us drink and made us Muslims.
What Is Asked in This Dua
This short dua is an expression of gratitude more than a request. When the meal is over, those at the table together praise Allah, who fed them and quenched their thirst. In this way they express that the true Owner of the bread, the water and the blessing on the table is Allah, and that a person is only a servant to whom this blessing has been delivered.
The most striking aspect of the dua is that it places a spiritual blessing beside the material one. While praising Allah for being fed and given drink, the servant, in the same sentence, also gives thanks for the blessing of faith by saying “who made us Muslims.” In this way, the meal becomes an occasion for gratitude: the provision that nourishes the body and Islam that fills the heart are remembered within the same praise. Reciting the dua together also strengthens the sense of unity and brotherhood among those sharing the table.
When and How to Recite
The source book states that this dua is recited together by those at the table after a communal meal. It is suitable for reciting when the meal is over at the family table, at iftar or at hospitality meals. The source book does not mention a specific number of recitations; reciting it once while reflecting on its meaning is enough. Being in a state of wudu is not required. Those who find the Arabic difficult can also praise Allah with its meaning in their own language; what matters is giving thanks while accepting from the heart that the blessing eaten comes from Allah.
