Dua Text

Subhanaka: O Allah! I glorify You above every imperfection and remember You with Your praise. Your Name is exalted, Your majesty is great. There is no god but You.
At-Tahiyyat: All greetings, prayers and good things belong to Allah. O Prophet! Peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger.

Rabbana Atina: Our Lord! Give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire. Our Lord! Forgive me, my parents and all the believers on the Day when the reckoning takes place.
What Is Asked in This Dua
Taken together, these duas within the prayer form its spiritual backbone. With Subhanaka, the servant begins the prayer by glorifying Allah above every imperfection, remembering Him with praise and saying that there is no god but Him; the book describes this as asking Allah’s permission when beginning the prayer. In At-Tahiyyat, it is said that all praise and worship belong to Allah, peace is sent upon the Prophet, then peace is sent upon all the righteous servants, and faith is renewed with the shahadah.
In Allahumma Salli and Barik, the servant asks that the mercy and blessing given to Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and his family also be given to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his family. In the Rabbana duas, he asks for good in this world and the Hereafter, protection from the punishment of Hell, and forgiveness on the Day of Reckoning for himself, his parents and all believers. In this way the prayer begins with glorification and is completed with salawat and a plea for forgiveness.
When and How to Recite
These duas are recited within the prayer itself, at specific places. Subhanaka is recited at the beginning of the prayer after the opening takbir; At-Tahiyyat in the sitting at the end of every two rak’ahs; Allahumma Salli and Barik in the final sitting after At-Tahiyyat; and Rabbana Atina before the salam. The book states that reciting At-Tahiyyat in every two rak’ahs is wajib, while Salli and Barik are sunnah.
Since the prayer is performed in a state of wudu, these duas are recited with wudu. The book states that At-Tahiyyat was given as a gift to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ on the night of the Miraj. Within the prayer they are recited in Arabic; learning their meanings increases one’s humility and focus (khushu’) in prayer.
