Dua After Fajr Prayer

Explanation
This is the dua recited after the Fajr prayer that contains Allah’s names al-Awwal, al-Akhir, az-Zahir and al-Batin.
Dua Text
Transliteration
Allahumma antal-Awwalu fala shay’a qablaka, wa antal-Akhiru fala shay’a ba’daka, wa antaz-Zahiru fala shay’a yushbihuka, wa antal-Batinu fala shay’a yaraka, wa antal-Wahidu bila kathirin, wa antal-Qadiru bila wazirin, wa antal-Mudabbiru bila mushirin.
Meaning
O Allah! You are al-Awwal (the First); there is nothing before You. You are al-Akhir (the Last); there is nothing after You. You are az-Zahir (the Manifest); nothing resembles You. You are al-Batin (the Hidden); nothing sees You. You are One, without multiplicity. You are All-Powerful, without a helper. You arrange every affair, without an adviser.
What Is Asked in This Dua
In this dua, rather than asking Allah for something, the servant comes to know and glorify Him. He remembers Allah by the name al-Awwal: there was nothing before Him, and He is the beginning of everything. He remembers Him by the name al-Akhir: even when everything comes to an end, He remains; nothing is left after Him. He remembers Him by the name az-Zahir: His existence is plainly evident, yet nothing resembles Him. He remembers Him by the name al-Batin: He sees everything, but no eye can encompass Him.
The rest of the dua expresses Allah’s oneness and absolute power. He is One and does not multiply; He is All-Powerful and needs no helper; He arranges all affairs and consults no one. In this way, as he begins the day, the servant renews his awareness of tawhid by saying that the beginning and end of everything, the seen and the unseen, are in Allah’s hands, and he affirms that he will trust in Him alone throughout the day.
When and How to Recite
As its name suggests, this dua is recited after the Fajr prayer, among the tasbih and duas said after the prayer. No specific number of recitations is mentioned in the source; reciting it once is enough. It is preferable to be in a state of wudu, to recite it before getting up from the prayer mat and to reflect on its meaning.
The dua is based on the names al-Awwal, al-Akhir, az-Zahir and al-Batin mentioned in the third verse of Surah al-Hadid. Those who find the Arabic difficult can also make the dua with its meaning in their own language; what matters is to begin the day in Allah’s name by remembering Him with these names.
